Planning: How to Rule Your Own 7 Kingdoms

After all 9 Great Houses of Westeros, 8 Seasons, 7 Kingdoms, 6 Direwolves, 5 Kings, 4 White Walker Horsemen, 3 Dragons, 2 Deadly Weddings… and 1 Iron Throne – It’s Over.

Game of Thrones first aired in April 2011 and ended in May 2019 with epic season 8. The TV shows 8 year reign has finally come to an end and fans of the show were divided on how the end of the show panned out.

What tips can we pick up from the makers of the greatest tv show in history?

George R.R. Martin has yet to finish his book series. HBO’s TV adaptation of GoT overtook the novels in season six back in 2016. George R.R. Martin has recently revealed a deadline date for the 6th novel in the ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ saga, which is titled ‘ The Winds of Winter’, he’s revealed he will finish the book by the end of July 2020.

There is also a 7th book ‘A Dream of Spring’ which hasn’t even been started yet, so we’ll have a while to wait to find out if the ending will be the same as the TV series.

This demonstrates that when a great idea or ‘story’ in this case, is created, if you’re not quick enough, someone else will finish the story for you.

So, how does all this translate into your business?

If you have a fantastic, innovative idea but you don’t have a plan to execute it, that includes time scales, goals and financial goal posts, you run the risk of someone taking your business idea and getting to the finish line before you.

And heaven forbid, you’ll miss your perfect window of opportunity to catch the creative curve for maximum success.

What should you do next?

Do a little writing of your own. Write a business plan – be the author of your own destiny.

One surefire thing to plan into your story is that you’ll be sitting on your own Iron Throne and successfully rule your 7 Kingdoms (well ok, 7 essential areas of your business) which are:

  1. Sales
  2. Expenses
  3. Cash Flow
  4. Employees
  5. Technology
  6. Marketing
  7. Big Picture

Plan ahead to know how your story pans out – start writing a business plan as soon as possible, what are you waiting for?

If you don’t, someone will write it for you which might leave you and others not happy with the ending.

George R.R. Martin’s outcome for being pipped to the post is slightly different in the fact that he worked with HBO and we all benefited from seeing the story of ice and fire brought to life on our TV screens. A great story of collaboration.
